Al Khobar - A Visit to the Transformation Wave

Al Khobar is a part of “The Triplet Cities” and forms a mega city along with Dhahran and Dammam. The city today has a booming economy and is preferred as a base by many local and international oil companies. But its canvas has not always been so colorful. This city was once only a small port on the Gulf which was a home to the local tribe named Al Dossary, whose people were mainly fishermen who earned their living from the creatures of the sea.

After the oil in commercial amount was discovered in early 20th century this city came in the limelight. Within the time span of two decades since the oil fields were discovered, this place underwent a drastic change, not only in its economy but in its quality of living as well. With the city now being considered as one of the major commercial hub and sea port, the city restructured itself with ultra modern concrete buildings, roads, shopping complexes etc. on the space that was earlier occupied with the mud huts of fishermen. In the last 80 years Al Khobar has evolved as a modern coastal city with beautiful beaches, cafés and restaurants which, as a traveler, you can explore by renting a car which will take you on the roads of this remarkable city.

During 1940s and 1950s, the largest oil company of the world, Saudi Aramco, claimed these deserts and based its commercial headquarters at Dhahran. Al Khobar is located to the east of Dhahran on the Gulf coast because of which it became significant shipping point from where the crude oil of Saudi was transported to Bahrain. After the world- war the expansion of the oil industry resulted in shifted focus from Al Khobar to other cities of the north like Damman and Ras Tanura. As a result of this the city of Al Khobar gradually lost its initial role as shipping point but evolved itself to be the commercial center for the whole area.

This city now boasts of everything a contemporary coastal city should have and all this can be enjoyed by renting a car in which you can roam around without wasting time.
