Its popularity rose rapidly after India won the 1983 World Cup and it became a well-known venue for tournaments, especially one-day internationals. These matches attracted the local South Asian expat population in Sharjah. In addition to international matches, Sharjah Cricket Stadium also hosted various important cricketing events including the Asia Cup, Singer-Akai Cup, and the Sharjah Cup. In 2010, the stadium made its way into the Guinness Book of World Record for the most number of one-day internationals (200) hosted at a single venue.
